A single person’s entire head of hair is strong enough to support the weight of two elephants. Yes, really. Hair is insanely powerful, but it needs to be taken care of to maintain its superwoman like qualities. The thing is, though, that we’re not like Kim Kardashian or Jennifer Lopez who can have a stylist pamper their manes each and every day. Life gets in the way and the health of our hair takes a backseat. Be your own hair stylist and easily reinvigorate your locks with these home remedies for damaged hair.

Dry Hair

Make your hair go from the Sahara Desert to the Amazon with a hot oil treatment. This home remedy for damaged hair rehydrates parched tresses while protecting them from future damage. It’s an easy process that only requires one ingredient, natural oil. Any sort works well for a homemade hot oil treatment, but my favorites are coconut and olive. You can also add a couple drops of lovely smelling essential oils to add even more shine to the final product.

Process:

Take about a 1/2 cup or more (depending on hair length and thickness) of the oil, then warm it up. Making sure it does not boil. Rub it into your hair thoroughly to ensure every strand gets coated before covering it in a plastic bag and towel. After letting the treatment sit for 45 minutes, wash it out of your hair with shampoo.

Split Ends

These pesky nuisances are caused by excessive heat to hair, harsh shampoos, chlorine, and improper washing. They’re nearly inescapable and very annoying when they show up, but an unexpected ingredient from the kitchen can send them packing. That ingredient is mayonnaise. Yes, it sounds strange, but the egg and oil used to make the pale condiment result in soft, lush, and healthy hair.

Process:

Onto damp hair, apply enough mayonnaise to coat the length of your hair. Let it soak into your strands for about 30 minutes before washing it out with cold water.

If you aren’t keen on the idea of a mayonnaise mask, an egg mask works just as well. The egg strengthens your locks to prevent hair from splitting.

Process:

Mix together an egg yolk, two tablespoons of olive oil, and a tablespoon of honey. Apply to hair then let it rest for 20 minutes. Wash this mask off with cold water to reveal nourished locks.

Frizzy Hair

Anyone with curly or wavy hair can vouch for the fact that frizzy hair is a nightmare to get rid of. There are tons of silicon laden products available to reduce and prevent frizz, but they often times cause more problems by weighing down the hair. Apple cider vinegar works to smooth down frizz and give you more vibrant locks in the process.

Process:

Combine apple cider vinegar and water to use as a rinse after washing your hair. Be sure not to use this solution too often, every two weeks or so should be sufficient to keep frizz at bay.
